In this collection of essays, Bo Carlsson presents a conception of sociology of law as substantially based on the social sciences.

The essays take their point of departure in the progress of various programmes of social welfare policy in Sweden, where the laws are used as important instruments in order to put forward different values and goals, directing the normative structure and the social development of society. By focusing problems connected to “social steerage” and “communicative action”, the theoretical analyses and empirical findings will highlight serious problems connected to the Swedish instrumentalisation of law.

The subjects in the book range from custody disputes and juvenile delinquency, through mediation, social assistance, and the patient’s position in the health care system, to health prevention, moral panics and the changing picture of the father figure.

By emphasizing the importance of studying the law in a “social context”, the final essays will favour a research design of sociology of law based on the pragmatic character of case-methodology.

Bo Carlsson is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology of Law at the Department of Sociology, Lund University.
