Description
Pixels and Weights traces the situated work of research and development in a core area of artificial intelligence: computer vision. Drawing on an interactionist perspective, the analysis draws attention to how computer vision scientists produce knowledge and navigate technical production. Based on a multi-sited ethnography of research labs, it explores model development, benchmark dataset construction, and model implementation. The study develops concepts that address how this work is carried out within computational infrastructures and practical arrangements. Its contribution is a grounded account of how research and development in artificial intelligence is performed in practice.
