It is a central place, but a place cannot be central in a void, without its surroundings. This study therefore focuses on the settlements and settlement pattern in the surroundings in a long -term perspective. The main objective is to analyse and synthesise the results from contract archaeological excavations of settlements around Upp&aring;kra, in the context of the natural geographic landscape. The study investigates settlements consisting of farmsteads, houses and other features, the settlement pattern and settlement structure in the area around Upp&aring;kra in a long-term perspective, between BC 500 and AD 1000. The results are compared to those from other areas of Scania and Sweden. The purpose for doing so is to clarify the relations between surrounding settlements and Upp&aring;kra.<br \/>The overall picture that emerges from this study is that of a rich and densely populated area around Upp&aring;kra from the Early Roman Iron Age on. It was a central district with a hierarchical structure. The emergence and rise of Upp&aring;kra is considered to be related to the settlement expansion in the surroundings. The surroundings were populous and rich and made Upp&aring;kra a rich and important place with functions that benefited the local elite and the people. The surroundings and Upp&aring;kra were interdependent.<\/p>\n<p>H&aring;kan Aspeborg has been working in contract archaeology since 1990. He specializes in Iron Age settlement archaeology.
